The United States Department of Agriculture recognized its potential and sent it back to Miami in 1913, where it flourished and bore fruit for the first time. By 1923, it was aptly named after Edward Simmonds, a visionary behind the USDA’s Plant Introduction program

Avocado trees are self-pollinating and you’ll get a nice harvest with just one tree. They don’t require another variety in order to produce fruit. However, having a Type A and Type B avocado tree increases the chance of successful pollination and fruit set. Simmonds is a type A.
